What a burnt taste actually is
Inside every coil is a wick, usually cotton, that soaks up e-liquid. When you fire the device, the coil heats that saturated wick and turns liquid into vapour. If the wick is dry or only partly wet when the coil fires, the cotton itself scorches. That harsh, acrid taste is burnt wick, and once it is scorched, no amount of refilling brings it back.
So the goal is always the same: keep the wick fully saturated whenever the coil is firing.
The most common causes
1. Chain vaping
Taking puff after puff without pause is the number one cause. The wick cannot re-soak fast enough, so each hit dries it further until it burns. Give it a few seconds between draws.
2. Low e-liquid level
When liquid drops below the coil's intake holes, the wick stops feeding. Never let a tank or pod run near empty. Refill before it gets low.
3. Wattage too high
If your device lets you adjust power, running above the coil's rated range vaporises liquid faster than the wick can replace it. Drop the wattage into the recommended range printed on the coil or in the manual.
4. A new coil that was not primed
A fresh, bone-dry coil needs to soak before first use. Fire it dry and you burn it immediately.
How to fix it
- Refill the tank or pod so the wick sits in liquid.
- Prime a new coil: drip a few drops of e-liquid directly onto the exposed wick, install it, fill the tank, and let it sit for five to ten minutes before vaping.
- Lower your wattage to within the coil's range, then raise it gradually only if flavour needs it.
- Slow down and pause between puffs so the wick re-soaks.
- Prime your first puffs by taking a couple of gentle draws without firing, or short, low-power puffs, to pull liquid into the wick.
When the coil is already gone
If you have scorched the wick, the burnt taste will not clear no matter what you do. Replace the coil or, on a closed-pod device, swap in a fresh pod. Coils are consumable parts and wear out with normal use, typically after one to two weeks depending on how much you vape and how sweet your liquid is.
A quick word on liquids
Very sweet, dark e-liquids leave more residue on the coil and shorten its life, so heavy dessert flavours may need more frequent coil changes. High-VG liquids are also thicker and take longer to soak into the wick, so they need a little more priming patience.
